Fire & Rope Making School Presentation

In this 1 hour presentation, students learn the ancient arts of making fire with sticks and making rope with natural materials. These are basic skills used by native people the world over.

Fire by friction involves various forms of rubbing sticks together which makes heat sufficient to produce a coal, which is then used to light the fire. Topics include safe fire handling, wood selection, tinder bundles, fire tending and the process itself of making the coal with sticks.

Rope making involves processing natural materials into useable form and then making cordage. Local plants and trees that are good for making rope will be covered, along with the simple technique of rope-making.

This presentation is hands-on and engaging for students and teachers alike. There is something ancient about watching fire burst into flames with nothing but sticks. Kids will learn practical skills that they can use on their own.
