Arrow Making Class

Program Details

The anatomy of an arrow allows it to focus the potential energy of the taut bowstring to a single point and transfer this energy over a long distance with startling accuracy. The knock, fletching, shaft, and head must be crafted to be balanced and streamlined. This is difficult enough...then you have to make a whole handful of them that all match! Crafting arrows teaches fine attention to detail and careful replication.

In this class, we will make a set of arrows from river cane, a plant perfectly suited to this use. We will use heat to straighten the shafts and flex them in hand to choose a set which will all bend similarly. Hardwood will be sued to strengthen the knocks and points of the shafts, feathers from the wings of wild turkeys will be bound to the shaft with sinews from the legs of the white tailed deer. Hardy points of steel will finish the arrows.

We shoot our arrows from wooden bows to test their flight and for the joy of watching them dart lightning-quick through the still air.
